Relationship Building: Strategy #6 Network

Go Out and Network
Networking works for all professionals in many fields, but there's more to networking than passing out your business card or placing your business in a directory.  Networking involves consistency and communication.  To benefit from networking you must be organized, proactive, and your business should have a chosen target audience to market to with your products and services.

Inspire & Motivate Them
Give talks related to your area of expertise. You would be surprised at how many people would be interested in all that you know.  Talk to libraries and industry associations  to get placed on their list of presenters for meetings. This can be a process so make a plan and stay diligent.  Write articles about what you know and specialize in.  Contribute to web sites, blogs, and newsletters.  Create you own network and look for other professionals who serve the same clients as you but who don't compete directly with you. Create a time to share business tips, referrals, etc.

Follow up on Leads
All the leads in the world are worthless if you don't follow up on them. Make notes on the back of business cards to help you remember specific contacts. Make the phone calls or send the information you promised. Basically, just to stay in touch. Marketing is following up on leads.  It isn't a one-time hit-or-miss proposition. Building a successful practice takes patience and ongoing marketing.
P.S.  Don't forget to ask for the business. Like it or not, selling is part of any business.

Relationship Building: Strategy #4 Listen & #5 Enhance

#4  Listen
Most of us don't think there are similarities with business relationships and personal relationships.  Listening to those you are in relationship with is just as important as telling or talking to those you are in relationship with.  Listen more than you talk so that your client or audience feels that you are truly interested in their opinions or feedback.  In actuality, being a good listener creates an atmosphere of trust therefor making more opportunities for you to be "the expert."  Create Two-Way Communication using Tools like your Web site, E-newsletters, Customer Surveys, Forums and Blogs to capture feedback from your customers and a place to stay in contact with them responding to their questions or concerns.  Apologize and clear things up with your customers quickly and use the rule:  Honesty is the best quality.  If a customer leaves a negative comment on your blog, try your best to use it in your favor if the comment is not too negative.  Show your customers that your business is not perfect but that you are willing to work most situations out.

#5  Enhance Your Customer Service
What kind of perception does your customers have about your business?  Are you reliable, speedy, or  trustworthy?  Take time out and make a list of customers important to your current and future success.  Identify those relationships that are the most valuable to your business and try a simple task:  write a sincere thank you note.  When you go the extra-mile to acknowledge how important your customers are to your business and how much you appreciate them for choosing to do business with you it will help you build repeat business, create positive word-of-mouth and increase sales from new customers as a result.

It's important that people see your business as the expert in the field

Here's a great way to enhance your customer relationships through writing Thank You Cards!  Send Out Cards is a great resource to engage and build relationships with current and new clients.

Relationship Building: Strategy #3 Hold Special Events

You Are My Special Guest
Invite your customer to attend an event and plan to meet face-to-face. This will deepen the relationship naturally as you get to know your customers better.  Encourage them to bring a friend and/or colleague.  Networking events are a great setting for building those business-to-business client relationships.  Create special events for your customers to come and meet-and-greet with you.  If you are a brick 'n mortar business, hosting an event where you showcase your products and services while your customers experience live music or food is a great way to learn more about your customers needs as well as giving your customers and opportunity to get to know you and your business outside of normal business hours.  If your business is solely online, hosting events at a cafe' where customers can mingle amongst other customers over coffee and something sweet make great opportunity for more sales and a chance for your customers to share testimonies.

Basically, if you don't have any kind of relationship with a customer, they're simply not going to be a customer. Consciously build a relationship where your customers know who you are, then give them an opportunity to tell you if they like what you do or voice their opinion on what you can do better. Always let them know you are here to help them. These are great topics to discuss in a face-to-face setting that build trust and solidify relationships.

Offline to Online:  Social Media
Implementing social media into your face-to-face strategy seems a bit silly but how else do you get the word out and then allow those who were not ale to come to experience the event?  Social media is a fabulous platform 'express & experience' your company and it's brand in a matter of clicks.  Take a look at this video on how a brick 'n mortar business takes a offline experience online.

Relationship Building: Strategy #2 Offer a Reward

Last week we talked about communicating Frequently with clients and personal connections by doing the following:  writing handwritten thank you notes, remembering birthdays, and educating Your Clients.  We also encouraged everyone to try the 30 Day Gratitude Challenge.  This week we are going to move forward with strategies 2-6 on building relationships.  Here's strategy #2:  Offer a Rewards.

Benefits of Network Marketing

In the great world of network marketing, we have the opportunity to meet a lot of people and learn new skills of this profession.  There is no other industry out there that gives you the satisfaction of personal development and making an income of your dreams.  However, what road do some tend to travel in order to make it a successful journey or a journey filled with demise?

I'm sure you would agree that our success depends on how we treat the people we come in contact with. However the element that tends to hurt us is not having enough patience after the official introduction to the business and the team. Taking time to help that person develop, like we did, is necessary to truly leverage your time. In the traditional world we are taught to work more despite overtime and make more money. In our profession if we take the time to develop each other and be authentic, we will have everyone working a small amount of time and making a whole heck of a lot more money. We must not treat anyone like just another number.

In this profession learning leadership skills is essential to ones growth and success in the industry. However far to many times these tools are not studied, or there over looked or not duplicated. If leaders before us set the pace on how to create success within our group, it makes our job much easier to be successful as well as duplicatable. Let's look at some of the characteristics that defy those avenues to success.

  Characteristics of A Leader
  • Ability to pull a group of people together to help assist, teach, and motivate them
  • A Teacher
  • Ability to add value to those they are mentoring
  • Creates time to help a person develop their skills
  • Leverages their time
  • Never treats a person as if they are a "number"
  • Knows the importance of teamwork
  • Reaches out to those that really want to learn and develop their skills
  • Knows how to cultivate a learning environment for those they are mentoring allowing them to learn at their own pace
My mentors over the years have showed me the importance of teamwork, reaching out to those that really want it as well as those that have the ambition to learn the skill. If you know the most unique thing about a team member is that everyone learns at their own pace, you will be successful no matter the business type. You will have the 30's, 60's and the 100's. Ones that will grow as time goes but are excited, ones that just need the extra push, and ones that are self starters. One thing is for certain... We all need to be given the right attention to succeed and never be left to our own demise.

Relationship Building: Strategy #1 Communicate Frequently

Communicate Frequently with clients and personal connections by:

  • Handwritten Thank You Notes
  • Remember birthdays
  • Educate Your Clients

Take the 30 Day Gratitude Challenge!
No one really talks about the challenge to be grateful.  Authors have published books, Cd's, and have held seminars on the importance of this subject.  When was the last time you have shown appreciation to someone just because?  Have we become so much of a "microwave society" with sending emails and texts?  Don't get me wrong, these tools are viable to our various ways of communication, but they are not genuine to relationship building.  The most powerful way to gain better business partners, clients, more customers, and retain customers is through a single act of kindness  One strategic way to build better and solid relationships is through gratitude...take the 30 Day Gratitude Challenge.
